7 Deadly Sins of Hair Damage!

7 Deadly Sins of Hair Damage!!!

We all know that the Queensland weather plays havoc with your hair, but did you know about the damage we all do to our hair every day? Today we want to talk about the 7 deadly sins of hair damage and what you can do about it.

 Damaged Hair

Sin 1: Your hair dryer

Blow Dry Damage

Who likes to use their hair dryer every single day? Well using it every day can cause some serious damage over time. Water collects under the outmost layer of your hair and the heat causes it to bubble. This causes the hair to stress and break which eventually leads to split ends and dullness.

What can you do about it?

Space out your blow drying sessions. If you want to go a step further, blow dry cold or towel dry and then use a low heat. When you hair feels dry then don’t blast it anymore.

Sin 2: Straighteners and curlers

We all know the magic of heat tools and the styles that we can do on our hair with them. But heat and your hair is a top cause of hair damage. We also know that water boils at 100 degrees and causes water to bubble. Heat tools can do the same to your hair as it causes the hair to bubble inside the hair shaft. The end result is brittle hair leading to breakages.

What can you do about it?

We don’t recommend using your hair straighteners every day and limit the amount of time the heat tool is on your hair. Always use a good heat treatment for your hair before styling.

Sin 3: Bobby pins

We all use bobby pins, but did you know they actually damage your hair? The reason for this is that they grip the hair tight to hold it into place, slowly cutting into the hair shaft and causing hair damage!

What can you do about it?

Reduce the number of pins you use in your hair or style your hair a different way, changing the location of your bobby pins.

Sin 4: Putting your hair up or Combing it wet

Wet Hair Damage

Your hair is susceptible to damage when it is wet as the bonds aren’t as strong in your hair. So, if you tie it up wet, it traps the moisture in your hair and weaken the bonds and thickness of your hair strands. This can cause all sorts of issues, the most extreme resulting in hair loss. Combing you hair is REALLY bad for your hair, the amount of damage you can do it scary.

What can you do about it?

Don’t put your hair up wet, let your hair dry naturally dry if you can. Ultimately to reduce breakage and loss, putting your hair up when it’s wet is a big no-no. And NEVER EVER comb you hair wet.

Sin 5: Chlorinated water

Chlorine is HORRIBLE for your hair as it literally sucks the moisture out of each strand. Swimming in a pool may feel heavenly, but it’s hellish for your hair.

What can you do about it?

Wash your hair immediately after swimming in chlorinated water with a good shampoo, rinse with shower water, then use a really good conditioner.

Sin 6: Weather

Weather Hair Damage

The sun, the beach, the humidity… hello Queensland. It’s what we love and what we live with but it’s also what our hair has to deal with. Not only can the combination of heat and humidity wreak havoc on your hair style but it can also cause hair damage.

As we discussed earlier, water and heat can cause damage to your hair. Throw in some UV and salt and you have a mixture for disaster.

What can you do about it?

The best thing you can do is to make sure you wash and condition your hair. Also, as much as it is tempting to use the straightener more frequently in the summer months, try to limit the amount of heat styling tools you use during this time. Your hair will thank you for it.

Sin 7: Products

Product Hair Damage

When combined with all of the above, products causes some of the biggest issues we see with hair.

Never buy products based on price, advertising, because it smells nice or worked well on your friends hair. We have seen hair that has been extremely damaged through the use of the wrong product and in extreme cases, when combined with the effects of styling tools and colouring, nearly fall out!

What can you do about it?

Get a professional opinion on what products to use. Your hair is individual to you and so should your product. Hair dressers are professionally trained and see all types of hair every day, so it makes sense to get an expert opinion.
